art from a mother & son

Mother abstract is a mother and son artistic team working using resin and encaustic and mediums to make abstract creations inspired from travel, nature, culture and people. We experience our artistic paintings with emphasis on depth, bold colors and natural design. Working together in our own studios based out of Grand Marais, Minnesota, we paint using our backyards and experiences as visual creativity.

About Encaustic Art

Encaustic painting, also known as hot wax painting, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid or paste is then applied to a surface of our handmade wood panels. Encaustic paintings have many layers of encaustic added to the surface, one on top of the other, with each unique layer being separately fused in. This results in a translucent luminous depth that is distinct to encaustic art. The luminous attribute of the art is born through a process of painting with encaustic, and then burning or fusing in each layer from the application of a heat source.

About Resin Art

Resin art is a shiny form of artwork with intricate natural details. We use a high quality epoxy resin for our work. Resin is made of two components, resin and hardener, when mixed together and color added, it will be left to completely harden (cure) over a 48-72 hour time period.
All pieces of artwork are intricately made from scratch from start to finish, resin has an overall smooth shiny finish and pieces display a glass like image, however due to the long curing process some pieces may have slight fine ripples or particles within the resin but nothing overly noticeable that will affect the overall high gloss finish.

Pieces are created on wood panel board build by the artists. Woodwork is high quality due to the fact the we select only the best pieces of wood and use high quality materials to construct the frames.

About the artists.

Diane “The Mother”

Diane has been an artist for several decades. She uses acrylics, oil, and encaustic mediums to create her pieces. A lover of cruises, she has traveled all over the world to gain inspiration for what she decides to paint. Having been fortunate to practice paintings styles on multiple continents she feels the need to put these different perspectives in each and every one of her pieces.

Jamien “The Son”

Jamien is an abstract artist creating work with mixed mediums, with his main medium being resin.  His vision is to create semi-natural feeling outcomes with unnaturally manipulated mediums to create a depth of texture and detail that only resin can make. He feels a deep sense of freedom and peace with the style, but also a significant challenge. Resin art requires the assistance of a blowtorch and respirator while working with the medium. This is invigorating but can also cause significant troubles and a lack of control that can be meditative or infuriating.  Along with his art he works as a social worker, having worked with homeless youth in San Francisco and families struggling with drug and alcohol abuse in Australia. Australia is the place where he first started to work with resin which he learned from other artist in that area. He connects with abstract art because he finds it similar to working with vulnerable populations, as there is so much beauty even if we might be confused with what we’re first looking at.
